Working Groups

The EAACI Working Groups are established as part of the Interest Groups or Sections. Each chair of the Working Group sits automatically as an additional board member in their respective Interest Group or Section board. The EAACI Working Groups represent relevant and growing scientific areas for the academy and have a clear link or common interest to their Interest Group or Sections.

Honoring Prof. Dr. Erika Jensen-Jarolim: A Visionary Force and the Dynamic Founder of AllergoOncology

Erika Jensen-Jarolim

As we mark an important transition within our Working Group, we take a moment to honor the remarkable contributions of Prof. Dr. Erika Jensen-Jarolim, a true pioneer and driving force behind the field of AllergoOncology. While she has passed the leadership of the EAACI Working Group on AllergoOncology (WG AO) to Prof. Sophia Karagiannis following the last election, Erika’s influence and legacy will continue to shape the group’s direction, particularly as she takes on the role of Scientific Advisor.

Prof. Dr. Erika Jensen-Jarolim, Head of the Institute of Pathophysiology and Allergology at the University of Vienna, is widely recognized as the founder of theof the concept of AllergoOncology. In 2006, she introduced this groundbreaking idea during a lecture at the Collegium Internationale Allergologicum Symposium in Malta (Allergo-oncology: the role of IgE in tumor defense). At the time the notion that IgE could play a role in tumor defense was revolutionary. Yet, through Erika’s unwavering determination, this concept took root and flourished.

She spearheaded the 1st and 2nd International AllergoOncology Symposia in Vienna in 2007 and 2008, attracting leading experts from Allergy and Oncology. This momentumled to the establishment of the AllergoOncology Task Force within the EAACI in 2014. Since then, several seminal Position Papers on the subject have been produced and published in EAACI journals. The success of the concept and the intensive work of Prof. Dr. Erika Jensen-Jarolim and secretary, Prof. Sophia Karagiannis at Kings College London, led to the transition of this highly active AllergoOncology Task Force into a Working Group on AllergoOncology (WG AO) in EAACI in 2020.

Since then, 6 task forces have been established within the WG AO in the past few years and are intensifying research collaborations and fostering a deeper understanding of the immune system’s role in allergy and cancer.. Through highly cited Position Papers, scientific meetings, and international symposia, Erika’s vision has shaped the research landscape, bringing together experts to drive forward impactful discoveries. for the treatment of allergies and cancer. Importantly, Erika’s work has inspired talented young scientists and clinicians to join EAACI and WG AO focusing their research on AllergoOncology.

Thanks to Erika’s visionary research, collaboration and unwavering commitment to the concept of AllergoOncology that well over 1000 members have now joined the EAACI WG AO and are dedicated with great enthusiasm to further developing and advancing this field. Erika has generated a lasting legacy on the critical importance of the connections of the immune system in allergy and cancer patients.

On behalf of the WG AO Board, and particularly Sophia Karagiannis, who has worked alongside Erika as a trusted collaborator, we extend our deepest gratitude., Erika, your spirit, vision, and scientific dedication have made an indelible mark on AllergoOncology, uniting fields and shaping the future of research in allergy, immunology and oncology.

Thank you for your tireless efforts and unwavering passion—we are honored to build upon the foundation you have so brilliantly laid.
