EAACI Anaphylaxis Awareness Day

Join us in raising global awareness for a life-threatening condition.

On 21 November 2024, during the opening day of EAACI FAAM-EUROBAT 2024 in Athens, Greece, EAACI proudly launches World Anaphylaxis Day. This global initiative is dedicated to raising awareness of anaphylaxis, promoting preventive measures, and fostering a better understanding of how to respond to this serious allergic reaction. We invite medical professionals, organizations, and the global community to unite in spreading knowledge and promoting safety around this critical health issue.

What is Anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that requires immediate medical intervention. It can be triggered by allergens such as specific foods, insect stings, medications, or latex. Affecting around 1-2% of the global population, anaphylaxis poses a growing public health risk. Without swift treatment, such as administering adrenaline, the consequences can be life-threatening.

Why World Anaphylaxis Day?

Despite the increasing prevalence of anaphylaxis, many people lack the knowledge to recognize or respond effectively to an anaphylactic reaction. World Anaphylaxis Day aims to address this knowledge gap by focusing on five key areas:

  •     Educating the Public: Raising awareness of anaphylaxis symptoms and encouraging quick recognition and response.
  •     Promoting Prevention: Highlighting the importance of allergen avoidance and personalized action plans for those at risk.
  •     Training Emergency Responders: Ensuring caregivers, teachers, and first responders are equipped to handle anaphylactic emergencies.
  •     Supporting Those Affected: Sharing the personal stories of those living with severe allergies to foster empathy and community support.
  •     Advocating for Better Resources: Calling for improved access to emergency medications, clearer allergen labeling, and stronger support systems in public spaces and workplaces.

Our Vision for World Anaphylaxis Day

World Anaphylaxis Day is not just a one-time event, but the start of an ongoing global movement. It is our hope that this day will become an annual fixture in the health calendar, with more and more people, institutions, and governments participating each year. Through increased visibility, education, and advocacy, we can drastically reduce the incidence of severe allergic reactions and save lives.

  • A Global Call to Action: We call upon governments, healthcare providers, schools, and businesses to take active steps in protecting those at risk. From ensuring access to adrenaline auto-injectors to mandating allergen labeling, there are countless ways we can make a difference.
  • Empowering Individuals and Families: World Anaphylaxis Day empowers those living with the condition to take control of their health by providing them with practical tools, education, and support.
  • Raising Global Awareness: Through media outreach, educational campaigns, and social media efforts, we aim to bring anaphylaxis into the spotlight and build a worldwide movement around prevention and treatment.

World Anaphylaxis Day will serve as a platform to share stories of survival, bravery, and resilience, as well as to promote understanding and empathy for those who live with severe allergies. By educating the public, supporting those affected, and advocating for policy changes, we are working to reduce the impact of anaphylaxis and ultimately, save lives.

Be a part of the global movement for anaphylaxis awareness and action.
