Heimo Breiteneder

Heimo Breiteneder completed his undergraduate and PhD studies in Botany and Biochemistry at the University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria. He received his PhD from the University of Vienna in 1985. In 1988, he cloned the first plant allergen worldwide, the major birch pollen allergen Bet v 1. He is Professor of Medical Biotechnology at the Medical University of Vienna in Vienna, Austria, and the head of the Division of Medical Biotechnology at the Department of Pathophysiology and Allergy Research. As a research scientist and research manager he conducts studies in the areas of pollen, latex, plant and animal food allergy as well as in the development of melanoma vaccines. His current interest is in the interaction of allergens with the innate immune system and the mechanisms that result in allergic sensitization. Prof. Breiteneder, currently an Associate Editor of Allergy, is an internationally well recognized speaker on allergen systematics and the molecular biology of allergens.
